An independent research desk
for operators who read before they act.

For fifteen years I have studied why hotel guests come back, why they don't, and what the signals in their words actually predict about a property's revenue three weeks later. Most of that work sat in journals that operators never read.

SPC Intelligence is the version written for the people who run the floor.

Why a briefing, not a dashboard

The industry is oversupplied with dashboards and undersupplied with judgment. A dashboard shows you a hundred numbers at 8:47 a.m.; a briefing tells you which three deserve a meeting before noon. Independent hotels — the ones without a Vice President of Insights to pre-digest the data — need the second thing.

So we built the second thing. Fifty thousand reviews a day, seven sources, a consented data layer, and an editorial discipline borrowed from equities research: short sentences, clear cause, and a number you can defend.

The signal we care about is not what a guest felt. It is what their wording tells you is about to happen to your asset value.

What we are not

We are not a reputation-management vendor, we are not a review-scraper wrapped in AI, and we do not sell leads to OTAs. Our members pay us directly, which means our only loyalty is to the member on the other side of the briefing.

We are also not an academic publication. The research that informs our models — on satiation, service recovery, choice overload, sentiment in hospitality text — is drawn from a broad body of published literature, including my own, but this product is the work of a private firm and is authored on my personal time.

Who this is for

Independent properties, small groups, and hospitality investors who want a seat at the same information table the chains have had for a decade. If you read your P&L before coffee, you will recognize the tone.

Six streams of published work feed the models.

Each stream below corresponds to a body of peer-reviewed research — our own and the field's — that informs a specific component of the SPC Intelligence briefing. These are research areas, not product modules.

  1. 01

    Satiation & revisit intention

When does a returning guest become a fatigued guest? Decade of work on the curve between repeat visits and revisit intention across winery, restaurant, and hotel contexts.

    2013 – Present
  2. 02

    Service recovery & apology

How wording, timing, and language style of a response to a negative review change forgiveness and booking intention. Foundation for our Urgent-queue scoring.

    2018 – Present
  3. 03

    Choice architecture in travel

Counterfactual thinking, sold-out information, unearned upgrades, and sunk-cost effects on traveler decisions. Underlies how we interpret guest disappointment in text.

    2013 – 2018
  4. 04

    Servicescape & visual priors

How architectural congruence, photograph size, and human imagery in hotel media shape booking intention. Context for what makes a guest's expectation out of sync with the room.

    2018 – 2021
  5. 05

    Frontline labor & emotional outcomes

Role stress, emotion regulation, substance use, and turnover among restaurant and hotel employees — including the COVID-era cohort. Informs our read on "front-desk tone" signals.

    2017 – Present
  6. 06

Text mining & machine learning in hospitality

Recent work integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior with supervised ML on review text, wine review analysis, and bibliometric mapping of the field. The backbone of our AI layer.

    2021 – Present

What we keep separate,
and why we publish it.

SPC Hospitality Consulting LLC is a private firm, independent of any university, employer, trade group, or data vendor. SPC Intelligence is authored on the principal's personal time and does not use any institutional resource, affiliation, or dataset.

Our independence is the product. We publish these commitments so our members — and anyone auditing our work — can hold us to them.

  • 01 —No institutional affiliation appears on any briefing, model, or commercial page. Academic and professional affiliations belong to the people, not the firm.
  • 02 —No institutional data, tools, or subsidized compute are used in the production of SPC Intelligence. All infrastructure is procured and paid for by the firm.
  • 03 —All work is conducted on personal time, outside any institutional role or compensated duty, and in compliance with applicable outside-activity policy.
  • 04 —Consent-based data only. We ingest guest review and operational data under explicit member consent; we do not scrape closed platforms or purchase third-party personal data.
  • 05 —No vendor revenue share. We do not accept affiliate commissions, OTA placement fees, or referral kickbacks. Members fund the work directly.
  • 06 —No advisory to parties that conflict with member interests. The firm does not simultaneously advise OTAs, review platforms, or direct competitors of a member property.
  • 07 —Research cited is publicly published. Our models build on peer-reviewed literature that is openly citable — not on proprietary, unpublished institutional findings.
